Department of Immigration and Border Protection have recently heightened their surveillance and action in regard to importing of goods that may possibly contain asbestos.
Before goods are imported to Australia, importers should ensure that their suppliers are NOT using asbestos in the manufacture of their goods. The onus is on the importer to provide sufficient assurance that the goods contain NIL asbestos.
Certification of testing conducted outside Australia must be from a laboratory that is accredited by international accreditation authorities (that are National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) recognised equivalents). DIBP will not accept any other certificates or statements provided by manufacturers or third parties in regard to testing of asbestos in goods.
Further information can be found on the DIBP website, or by contacting us.
